Objectives

The objective of the programme is to address the funding, mentoring and market access needs of Indian and UK clean tech start-ups by leveraging the expertise within both the India and UK clean tech ecosystems.

We want to build and leverage the power of the UK venture capital network which is currently under invested in the clean tech sector in India.

The programme will enable Indian and UK start-ups to expand internationally through market entry support in their respective cross border markets of interest and to leverage the potential of emerging technologies to drive sustainable economic growth in both countries.

Indian and UK startups will participate as a single cohort with the aim of encouraging peer learning, new tech R&D partnerships, and joint business development.

Who should apply?

Clean tech start-ups who are

– registered in India or the UK

– demonstrate a digital technology component

– looking to expand nationally or internationally (including the UK).

‘Clean tech’ for this programme covers new technologies that enable innovations in smart grid and energy storage, green transportation, and energy efficiencies in cities, buildings and industries (aka ‘smart technologies’).

We have a special focus on promoting green transportation/mobility technology. Startups from Maharashtra are encouraged to apply.

Women-led startups are encouraged to apply.

Program Beneficiaries: Cohort of 20+ Start-up Founders/CXO’s

This programme is targeted at founders and CXO level executives at early-growth stage startups. The cohort will comprise of clean tech start-ups who are seeking guidance on strategy and fundraising from global experts, as well as access to new avenues of international capital and business development in the wake of the COVID 19 disruption.

The programme will also bring in venture capitalists, mentors, and corporate programs interested in supporting exciting, new clean tech startups.

What is the programme structure?

The programme will be implemented in 3 phases.

Phase 1 : Trace

Selection of 20-30 India and UK clean tech start-ups.

Phase 2: Tutor

Capacity building of the Indian and UK start-ups by a mixed network of Indian & British experts.

Phase 3: Thrive

VC Pitch event, followed by mentoring, networking and market access support.

Background

The UK-India Tech Partnership was announced in April 2018 and represented the vision of the Indian and UK Prime Ministers to launch a strategic partnership that would bring ‘the best minds in tech together’.

This programme is a blend of ODA (Official Development Assistance) funded activity to support the Indian clean tech eco-system, and non-ODA funded activity to support the UK clean tech eco-system, with cumulative benefits for both.

The programme is jointly implemented by Department of International Trade (DIT) and Indian Prosperity fund programme, and co-funded by both ODA and Non-ODA money.

Climate change is the greatest challenge of our generation. Under this UK-India Tech Partnership, both our countries are looking to bring together the best minds in technology to tackle the global threat of climate change, as well as leverage the potential of emerging technologies to drive sustainable economic growth in both the countries. In the words of an Indian principal scientific advisor, ‘the disruption of COVID19 will pale in significance to what climate change will bring’.  As a host of the next, pivotal, global climate summit, the UK Government is committed to leading action.  

The objective of this 4-month programme is to get behind the innovation superheroes reducing emissions and pollution with green tech. Through a competitive selection process, a cohort of 20-30 promising Indian and UK clean tech start-ups will be assembled for an intensive capacity development programme culminating in a pitch event for an opportunity to win investment.  It aims to address the funding, mentoring and market access needs of Indian and the UK clean tech start-ups by leveraging the expertise within both the India and the UK clean tech ecosystem. In addition, it seeks to leverage the power of the UK venture capital network, which is currently under invested in the clean tech sector in India. The absolute best of the cohort will be invited to continue with a further mentoring programme and opportunities for fundraising.

 The programme is designed to enable selected Indian and UK start-ups to expand nationally and internationally through market entry support in their respective cross border markets of interest.

Indian and the UK start-ups will participate as a single cohort with the aim of encouraging peer learning, new tech R&D partnerships, and joint business development.

ACT4Green intends to accelerate Indian and UK start-ups by helping them:

  • Gain expertise in business development, market analysis and tech innovation.
  • Become investment-ready.
  • Access an opportunity to win investment from venture capitalists.

To apply, a start-up needs to:

  • Be registered either in India or in the UK
  • Be a clean tech start-up (i.e. engaged in clean tech as a primary activity)
  • Be generally looking for opportunities to raise funds
  • (in the case of a UK start-up) be looking to enter the Indian market
  • (in the case of an Indian start-up) be looking to expand in the Indian market or enter the UK market

We encourage applications from founders and leaders from all the walks of life.  We are particularly interested in receiving applications from women-led start-ups and green mobility start-ups in Maharashtra.

‘Women led’ start-ups may be either founded by women, have women co-founder(s), or include women working in leadership positions.

‘Clean tech’ for this programme covers new technologies that enable innovations in smart grid and energy storage, green transportation, and energy efficiencies in cities, buildings, and industries (aka ‘smart technologies’). Start-ups working in these domains will also be required to demonstrate a digital technology component in their solutions to qualify for the programme.

We are looking for start-ups that have already launched, or are ready to launch in the market, and are ready to pitch for and take in venture capital.

In general, these are start-ups that have secured Pre-series A or Series A funding, and are looking for further opportunities to raise funds.

We will select 20-30 clean tech start-ups to join the cohort.

The cohort will comprise of 20-30 cleantech start-ups who are seeking guidance on strategy and fundraising from global experts, as well as access to new avenues of international capital and business development in the wake of the COVID 19 disruption.

The programme will also bring in venture capitalists, mentors, and corporate partners interested in supporting existing and new clean tech start-ups.

The programme will be implemented in 3 phases:

  1. Trace – Selection of 20-30 India and UK cleantech start-ups through a process developed in consultation with VCs/experts.
  2. Tutor – Capacity building of the selected cohort of the UK and Indian start-ups by the network of British and Indian experts.
  3. Thrive – VC Roundtable, followed by customised mentoring, networking and market access support, culminating in a Pitch Day.

No, the programme will be conducted online/virtually, and there is no expectation to relocate.

We expect a commitment of about 3 hours per week for online sessions (2 hours) and networking (1 hour).

After submission, the applications will be evaluated by the jury members. If your application is shortlisted, the jury may request for a remote interview should they think they need to understand in greater detail. Once selected, you will be invited to join the ACT4Green programme.

Applicants will be evaluated on multiple parameters, covering: the market opportunity; technology potential; quality of team; traction and strength of business model; and, social & climate impact.

Any IP that is developed prior to or during the programme remains the sole property of the applicant team (or team members, as the case may be). If you feel any information is sensitive or confidential, we recommend not sharing the same during the application process.

We seek no rights over IP, nor represent to facilitate any assistance in any IP-related matters when dealing with potential partners for any engagements or opportunities.

No, ACT4Green will not seek any equity in, or fees from, the start-ups supported by the programme.

We will treat all application data as highly confidential information; however, we will share such data with jury members and programme partners for obvious reasons of evaluation and assessment. In your application, please do not disclose any information that you consider proprietary. The applicants will have the right to revoke/delete their data at any stage of the programme execution.
